Accountable: 2012 Edition
Beginning of the year? Time to look at last year’s resolutions and set some new ones. Get excited, Tumblrverse. First, the year past, which was a roller coaster ride and the best year of my life thus far.
2011 Resolutions:
1. Write more. Done pretty well! Even started a new novel, something I haven’t done in almost a decade. More to come.
2. Enroll for my master’s degree in...

48 Hours
48 hours from now I’ll be driving up to Boston to officially register as a Massachusetts resident. Followed by painting the last room in the apartment. Then Friday is the big move.
After nearly three years of dating, and three months of job hunting, it’s still hard for me to wrap my head around. But it’s happening. And I’ve never been so happy.
In Two States
Changing from one job directly to another literally divides your life into two. There’s the life that is finishing things up: setting things up for the next person to hold your job, discussing your going away happy hour, closing out accounts you won’t need.
Then there’s the life you’re going to. There are orientations to attend, apartments to prepare, and accounts to be...

Career Whirlwind
48 hours ago I received a job offer from Staples HQ.
28 hours ago, I gave my two weeks’ notice to my boss.
1 hour ago, it was officially announced by email that I’d be leaving.
13 days from now will be my last day.
14 days from now will mark the end of a three-year, “long distance” period in my relationship, and the beginning of an amazing new chapter, with...
westerbergismyhomeboy asked: Keep the 401K. When the market is down, you're buying stocks cheaper, so that when it goes up, you make more money. While it may take a while to go up and regain your initial investment, but the longer it's down the more you're buying now. You'll want to get out when stocks are up and you're about to retire. If you're not close to 65, there's not reason to...
401(k) 101
I need a better explanation of 401(k)’s. In my life, I’ve learned two rules about 401(k): Put in as much as your company will match, and it’s good to have one. In the past 2 years of having a 401(k), however, all I’ve done is watched the money I’ve put become a smaller amount of money. I think I’ve had one positive quarter.
Part of me just wants to pull out. My...

Fall is the Perfect Time for Writing
Any time is a good time for writing, but there is something about writing in fall that just feels right. Maybe it’s the attire, the sweaters over shirts and the use of more comfortable fabrics. It might be that hot beverages become increasingly acceptable throughout the day and nothing is more inspiring for me than staring out at a pile of fallen leaves while holding a mug of coffee or tea...

Fantasy Football is Fickle
I joined a Fantasy Football league this year, in the hopes that following the stats and tracking my team would get me more into football as a whole.
Instead, I’ve found that I’m watching less football than ever this season, but don’t feel like I’m missing anything, because I can track my Fantasy Football team on my iPod app anyway.
Fantasy Football also puts me in the...

Coffee Mug of Power
I find that when I get called to someone’s office for a meeting, taking my coffee mug with me gives me a sense of confidence bordering on superiority. It says, “Yes, I came to your meeting, but it’s not so important that it’s going to interrupt my coffee-drinking.” Maybe that’s why Lumbergh in Office Space carried that mug around. It says, “I’m not...

Throwback
According to this article, Jason Segel is planning on making a kids’ adventure film à la The Goonies. Now, in today’s modern, jaded society, I would love to say that such an idea is doomed to fail, and that you can’t rekindle the flame of the mid-1980s.
However, after watching those kids from Super 8, I have full confidence that you could assemble a group of child actors to...

– “20 things I wish I’d known at 20” by Maggie Mason
I remember quoting number 18 when I was 20 (BACK IN THE OLDEN DAYS TWO YEARS AGO), and this whole list still resonates with me. Posting it as a reminder to myself.

Hell for most is Heaven for some
I love statistics. Yes, I’m weird and I’ve come to terms with that. At work, I jump at the chance to analyze survey results. I make spreadsheets and compile data and calculate it as many ways as I can.
I remain convinced that someone could take the initiative and make an engaging game in Microsoft Excel. Maybe I should be that someone.
Just this morning, I realized I’d forgotten to button those...

Text from my girlfriend this morning:
“Museum of science has a Pompeii exhibit!!! It might even have a mold of the TARDIS!!”
Dang, I love that girl.
