I need a better explanation of 401(k)’s. In my life, I’ve learned two rules about 401(k): Put in as much as your company will match, and it’s good to have one. In the past 2 years of having a 401(k), however, all I’ve done is watched the money I’ve put become a smaller amount of money. I think I’ve had one positive quarter.
Part of me just wants to pull out. My company contributes through profit sharing, not matching my contribution anyway. But maybe I’m not understanding the big picture. We’re having a meeting at work today with people from our financial services company, but that will just be the usual company line of “Keep your money in the market. Trust us.” We’ll see how it goes.
