Changing from one job directly to another literally divides your life into two. There’s the life that is finishing things up: setting things up for the next person to hold your job, discussing your going away happy hour, closing out accounts you won’t need.
Then there’s the life you’re going to. There are orientations to attend, apartments to prepare, and accounts to be opened.
There are also some bridges between those: moving your stuff, mainly. But for those two weeks of notice, you live in two different states: one beginning, one ending.
I find that it divides your time and your attention, it’s like a perpetual distraction. Even when you’re working on one life, you’re thinking about the other, in the back of your mind. I think it’s a good thing there are only two weeks of overlap. People are built to live one life at a time.
